This is the private memorial site of Mathias Jensen (1878-1965). M. Jensen created this place of peace and reflection for himself and his fallen sons and sons-in-law.
History of the Sandpit
In the past, this area was used to extract building materials for road construction (manual and cart service) and marl from the pit, which was used as fertilizer for fields.
Until 1945, the Reich Labour Service (Reichsarbeitsdienst, RAD) used the property for shooting practice. Afterwards, this site was used as a rubbish pit until M. Jensen literally dug up the entire area with a digging fork and spade, planting various vegetables such as potatoes, fruits, and fruit trees. The lushness and beauty of the grounds gave rise to the name “Paradise”, a name that has been preserved to this day.
The property is now owned by the municipality of Bergenhusen and is entrusted to the local shooting guild for their activities.
